Exams, Assessment and School Performance

AUTUMN TERM 2022

We have had lots to celebrate this term. Our EYFS pupils have settled in remarkably well; they are happy and confident in their learning environment and know their way around school. They are getting to know members of staff, particularly as subject leads have been visiting EYFS to monitor early learning within their curriculum areas, and are keen to contribute to discussions in worship. They have developed good friendships with their Year 5 Buddies and were ready to enjoy lunchtimes without them by half term.

Staff at all levels are embracing our personalised curriculum and looking for ways to make learning memorable and fun. We have already had numerous enrichment activities:

Year 1 – Class trip to Judges Lodgings for A Victorian Christmas
Year 2 – Visit from the Fire Service
Year 3 – Forest school trip to Humblescough Farm
Year 4 – Cooking lessons at Broughton High school
Year 5 – Anglo Saxons Workshop
Year 6 – Journalism Talk with a journalist from The Times, residential visit to Tower Wood, WW2 Workshop, Preston Police knife crime and gangs workshop, class visit to The Imperial War Museum, Manchester.

We have also enjoyed plenty of whole-school activities including Harvest Festival, Movie Night, a Sponsored Colour Dash, a Poetry and Poppies Workshop (Y4-6), a Whole School Spirituality Day and Anti-bullying activities, not to mention a very successful Bonfire Night and Christmas Fair. Haven’t we been busy?

There was clear evidence of the benefits of our values-based curriculum when two ex-pupils, Rayaan Mal and Libby Church became Head Boy and Girl at Broughton High School and another ex-pupil, Oliver Biswas, Head of School at Lancaster Royal Grammar School.

At St Lawrence, we are not just about reading, writing and maths. In fact, I really do believe that the main reason we do so well in the core sunjects is down to the fact that we are blessed with staff who value the non-core subjects so highly and enjoy helping pupils to flourish in lots of different areas. That said, we were still very proud to learn that Barton St Lawrence is listed in the Sunday Times Parent Power School Guide and ranked in the top 25 highest achieving primary schools in the country.
